The scientific committee of the American Academy of orofacial pain is honored to share with you its 43rd scientific session: Optimizing Assessment and Management of Orofacial Pain.

AAOP Audience in San Diego

This conference at the beautiful Sheraton San Diego Hotel & Marina, May 2-5, 2019, in San Diego California will focus on recognizing clinical challenges faced by clinicians in assessment, diagnosis and management of all aspects of orofacial pain disorders. Rapid and significant advances of knowledge and our understanding of etiologies and pain mechanisms and management will be discussed. The content of this meeting will help fulfill our obligation to remain current on the state-of-the-art for the benefit of our patients as clinicians, educators and researchers in the field of orofacial pain and sleep disorders. There surely will be topics of interest for all in attendance.

Presenters from dentistry and medicine will provide information on the new classification system for diagnosis and management of temporomandibular disorders and orofacial pain. Headaches, neuropathic pain, forms of orofacial pain and sleep disorders will be addressed in the new system. This information can significantly impact the relationship between TMD and headaches, and aid in the novel biological approaches for their management.

As in the past, there will be four great pre-conference sessions. These include:

• Physical Therapy review course in the Assessment/Prediction/Management of The Patient with Head/Neck Disorders Post Whiplash, coordinated by our AAOP PT members and featuring as the primary speaker James Elliott, PT, PhD from Australia.

• Our famous course in Head and Neck Dissection is back, presented by Dr. Henry Gremillion, Dr. Ron Auvenshine and Dr. Terry Tanaka.

• The Orofacial Pain Review Course by Dr. Gary Heir and his peers also returns. It is a wonderful opportunity to apply didactic information and sharpen clinical skills.

• Lastly, the Sleep Medicine Course from our AAOP Sleep Medicine committee led by Dr. Elmer Villalon, Dr. Dennis Bailey, and Dr. Davis Thomas, during which they will share new information about sleep medicine, sleep disorders in a pediatric and adolescents, and sleep comorbidities.

The breakfast and lunchtime sessions include treatment topics to expand one’s practice: Treatment of TMD, Compound medications, Bruxism, Sleep and Pain, Myofunction Therapy, Cervicogenic Headaches, Opioids Crisis, and the Role of Cannabinoids in Pain Management.

We look forward to meeting you in San Diego at the Sheraton San Diego Hotel
and Marina from May 2 – 5, 2019.
