Primary Headache Disorders
Primary headaches include conditions such as migraines, tension-type headaches, and cluster headaches. These headaches are not caused by another medical problem but can still be frequent, painful, and disruptive to daily life.
Primary headaches are those not caused by another medical condition and include common types such as migraine, tension-type, and cluster headaches.
Migraine: Migraines often cause moderate to severe throbbing pain on one side of the head and may include nausea, sensitivity to light or sound, or visual disturbances called auras. They can last from hours to days and significantly impact daily life.
Tension-Type Headaches: These headaches usually feel like a constant pressure or tightness around the head, often described as a “band-like” sensation. They are commonly triggered by stress, fatigue, or muscle tension in the head and neck.
Cluster Headaches: Cluster headaches are intense, sharp headaches, usually around one eye, occurring in cyclical “clusters.” They may cause eye redness, tearing, or nasal congestion on the affected side.
Primary headaches can overlap with other orofacial pain conditions, such as jaw pain from temporomandibular joint disorders, muscle-related head and neck pain, or nerve-related pain like trigeminal neuralgia. Because symptoms can be similar, accurate diagnosis by a healthcare professional is important for effective management. Understanding triggers, maintaining healthy habits, and seeking timely care can help reduce the frequency and severity of these headaches and associated orofacial pain.
