2025 AAOP President’s Message
Michele A Schultz-Robins
My goal is to honor the foundation laid by those who came before while helping to shape a future defined by innovation, inclusivity, and purpose.
Dear AAOP member,
I would like to take a moment to thank the past Boards I’ve had the privilege to work alongside. Your leadership, wisdom, and example have guided me to this point, and I’m honored to now carry that torch forward. I would like especially to thank Mariona Mulet for her tireless energy in bringing about the changes we see today.
It is a true honor to accept the role as the 49th President of the American Academy of Orofacial Pain. I step into this position shaped by a lifetime of experience in both private practice and academic dentistry. For thirty-five years, I maintained a private practice in New Jersey focused on general dentistry and orofacial pain. In January, I transitioned to full-time teaching at RSDM, with dual appointments in the departments of orofacial pain and restorative dentistry. These varied roles have given me a broad perspective—and a deep appreciation—for the challenges and opportunities we all face in our field.
When I think back on my own journey within this Academy, what stands out most is how vital it was for me to ask questions, seek guidance, and be welcomed by those who were more seasoned. That generosity, that spirit of mentorship, shaped my professional path. It also instilled in me a responsibility to give back—as a mentor, a teacher, and now as your president.
Looking ahead, my goal is to honor the foundation laid by those who came before while helping to shape a future defined by innovation, inclusivity, and purpose. Supporting the next generation is essential to that future. That’s why we’ve launched the Young Members Initiative—to nurture and empower students, residents, and early career professionals who will carry our specialty forward. Their energy, creativity, and commitment will be heard and cultivated.
Just as importantly, we must remain steadfast in our advocacy. We have a responsibility to ensure that orofacial pain is not just recognized, but respected—by insurers, by healthcare institutions, and by the broader public. Through thoughtful outreach, interprofessional collaboration, and evidence-based care, we can advance our specialty and improve the lives of those we serve.
I am grateful to walk this path with all of you. Let’s continue to lead, to elevate, and to advocate—together.
Thank you
Michele A Schultz-Robins
